Act Of
1773 -:Introduction:-
It was the first step taken by the
British Government to control and regulate the East India Company. It also recognizes the political
and administrative functions of the East
India Company. It laid the foundation of
central administration in India.
-:Features:- 1.It designated the Governor of Bengal as Governor-General of Bengal, and Lord Warren Hasting had become the First Governor-General.
2.The Act also created an
Executive council of four members to assist the Governor-General of Bengal.
3.It made the governors of
Bombay and Madras presidencies sub-ordinate to the governor-general of Bengal.
4.The act also made the
provision for the establishment of Supreme court in Calcutta, comprising of one
chief justice three other judges.
5. It also made the provision of requiring report of its revenue,
civil and military affairs in India by Court of directors(governing body of the
company).
The main objective of this provision is to strengthen control of
British government over the company.
6. It also prohibited the company servants to engaging in private
trade or bribes from natives.
